Bitumen is a complex, highly viscous hydrocarbon mixture derived from crude oil’s heavy fractions. Large proportions are used as binder in asphalts for road construction. Decades of research led to better understanding of its properties and consequently also to asphalts with significantly improved durability and better economics. However, environmental stressing from encountered climatic conditions and especially heavy traffic limits these improvements.
